The Doon Library & Research Centre was established in the year 2006 with a view to providing a good library resource to the citizens of Dehradun. Apart from being the premier city and capital of the newly created state of Uttarakhand, Dehradun is also a major centre of education, a place where some major national institutions are located and a retired person's haven.
Unfortunately the city lacked a good public library and a place for organising regular discussions, presentations, seminars etc., activities that stimulate intellectual life and ultimately provide a defining personality to any city. The city has excellent institutional libraries, but these are specialised in nature and moreover are meant only for the staff of these institutions.
Another idea behind the establishment of the institution was to fill the long felt need for a research centre focusing on studies related to Himalayas in general, and Uttarakhand in particular, from the perspective of social sciences and humanities and also to undertake policy-oriented studies for the new state. The Doon Library has accordingly built up a fairly good collection of books on social science subjects and on Himalayas, covering the entire range of states and countries from the west to east, including the North-eastern states of India. Among other specialised collections are books by and on Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and B. R. Ambedkar.
